Navigating the New Orleans Airport During the Holidays

While it may be true that there’s no place like home for the holidays, sometimes plans include boarding a plane to visit family and friends or to explore a new destination.  Without proper preparation, travel can be demanding for seniors on an ordinary day, presenting a unique set of challenges and expectations.  When combined with the hustle and bustle of holidays, things can quickly go awry if you’re not prepared.  Therefore, it is crucial to take necessary precautions and plan ahead to ensure that your holiday travel plans go as efficiently as possible.  Here are some travel tips to keep in mind while navigating through the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) and connecting destinations, alike.

  1. Plan Ahead

Stress free travel begins with planning ahead.  This sets the foundation for a smooth travel experience by controlling as many factors as you’re able to.

  • Book Flights Early:

The sooner you purchase your tickets, the better!  Seats tend to fill up quickly around high-demand travel times, driving up the prices and limiting the selection.  Book early to ensure better seat options and schedules.  When possible, select a non-stop flight to reduce the possibility of delayed or cancelled flights, rushed connections, and misplaced luggage.

  • Know the Airport:

Before arriving at the airport, familiarize yourself with the terminal(s) so you’re able to navigate the airport with ease.  You can visit the airport’s website to locate facility maps which will outline important features of the airport, including airline locations, luggage claims, restrooms, restaurants, and seating areas, to name a few.

  • Request Necessary Assistance:

If you have limited mobility and need assistance, make a special request at the time of your booking.  Wheelchair and/or escort services are available through most airlines at no additional cost. They do require advance notice, so be sure to plan ahead.

  1. Be Organized and Arrive Early

The holiday season brings a large influx of travelers to the airport. Naturally, this equates to longer lines all throughout the airport, including check-in, security, boarding, bathrooms, baggage claims… you name it!  Being prepared for the crowds will help to prevent any mishaps.

  • Arrive Early:

In this case, time is of the essence.  Allowing yourself extra time for all steps of the travel process will significantly decrease the chances of missing your boarding time. For domestic flights, it is recommended that you arrive 2 hours before your scheduled departure time, while international flights require a 3-hour cushion.  This will ensure that you have ample time to handle any unexpected delays that may arise.

  • Curbside Check-in:

Take advantage of the curbside check-in offered by many of the airlines.  This is particularly helpful for individuals who are traveling alone or who may experience limited mobility.  You can have a family member, friend, or car service drop you off, and then you can immediately get your boarding pass and check your luggage at the terminal entrance.

  • Be Organized:

Having all proper identification and documentation ready and easily accessible will help to expedite your travel experience. All travel essentials, including your ID, boarding pass, and medications, should be stored in a small bag that is on your person at all times.

Navigating Security

Oftentimes, security is one of the most dreaded parts of the air travel experience.  The lines have a reputation for being long and the process can feel somewhat intimidating.  Knowing the process and being prepared will help put your mind at ease and take the hassle out of the experience.

  • Consider TSA precheck:

This program offers expedited security lines and an abbreviated screening process, once you’re approved.  It is especially beneficial for seniors because it provides faster airport security screening, is more convenient, and less stressful.  With TSA precheck individuals are exempt from removing their shoes, belts, jackets, etc.  Furthermore, items like laptops and liquids are allowed to remain in your carry-on bags.  Anyone who experiences limited mobility may benefit from this streamlined process.

  • Medical Needs:

If you go through traditional security, be sure to inform TSA agents about any particular medical devices that you may have, such as pacemakers and insulin pumps.  You may also request a private screening if you would feel more comfortable doing so.

  • Dress Comfortably:

A full day of travel can seem even longer if you’re not dressed comfortably for the occasion. Clothing choices, such as shoes that are easy to put on and take off and pants that don’t require a belt, can help streamline the security process.  Compression socks are also beneficial for long flights, as they help reduce swelling and the risk of blood clots.

Senior-Friendly Amenities

There are many amenities throughout the airport to make travel easier and more accessible for seniors.  Be sure to take advantage of them to make your travel experience enjoyable and as stress-free as possible.

  • Mobility Assistance:

Escalators, elevators, and moving walkways are all designed to assist travelers throughout the airport.  Choose whichever one(s) you’re most comfortable using to get you from point A to point B.  You can also rely on any prearranged services to assist you to your gate.

  • Hydration Stations:

It is important to stay hydrated during a long day of travel.  Bring a water bottle and fill up at any of the designated fill stations throughout the airport.  This is also a great way to save money while traveling.

  • Comfortable Seating:

MSY has plenty of seating areas, including quiet zones, where you can relax while you wait to board your flight.

Boarding and In-Flight Tips

  • Early Boarding:

Seniors, or individuals needing additional assistance, can often take advantage of early boarding with most airlines.  A gate agent can confirm whether you are eligible for this service or not.  Once you’re on the plane, a flight attendant can help you arrange your carry-on in the overhead compartment.

  • Stock up on Essentials:

Airlines allow you to keep a personal bag with you during your flight.  Be sure to pack items like snacks, medications, and a travel pillow to ensure your comfort.  A good book, word search, or a knitting project is a great way to stay entertained while in the air.

  • Stretch Breaks:

It’s advisable for individuals of all ages to stand up and stretch over the course of a long flight.  This is especially important for seniors as it promotes circulation, reduces stiffness, and lowers the risk of blood clots.
