Bayou Swamp Tours

Swamp tours offer a serene and unique way to enjoy the lush bayou landscape commonly found throughout South Louisiana.  With many great options within an hour outside of New Orleans, this makes a great choice for a day trip outside of the city.

 

  • Honey Island Swamp– Slidell, LA

This is conveniently located about 45 minutes outside of New Orleans and provides a full swamp tour experience.  A boat ride through the swamp will offer wildlife sightings, moss-draped landscapes, and educational commentary.  You’ll likely spot alligators, turtles, native birds, and more over the course of your ride.

  • Manchac Swamp– LaPlace, LA

About 40 minutes from New Orleans, you’ll find a calm and picturesque private wildlife refuge, making it a bit quieter than some of the other venues.  The opportunity for wildlife sightings is equally abundant, but you may also learn about Rougarou, a local legend.

  • Bayou Segnette– Westwego, LA

  • Oak Alley Plantation– Vacherie, La

About an hour outside of New Orleans, you’ll be greeted by the iconic 300-year-old oak-lined pathway.  Stories and exhibits about slavery, sugarcane farming, and plantation life are just a few of the highpoints of this plantation.  Golf cart shuttles, wheelchair accessibility, and on-site dining making it a great option for seniors.

  • Houmas House Plantation and Gardens– Darrow, LA

Stunning gardens, art collections and a reflecting pool are just a few of the attractions you can find just about an hour outside of New Orleans.  Guided tours, upscale dining, and afternoon tea make this “Crown Jewel of Louisiana’s River Road” a must see destination.  Wheelchair accessible pathways throughout the gardens, along with slower-paced tours ensure that it’s relaxing and accessible for all.

  • Destrehan Plantation– Destrehan, LA

Only 25 miles away, this is one of the closest and oldest plantations near New Orleans.  Enjoy the French Colonial and Creole influences while touring the fully restored Mansions, adorned with wrap-around porches.  Slave cabins, outhouses, and a special documented enslaved exhibit offer a deeply moving insight into the daily lives and living conditions of the enslaved workers.

  • The Myrtles Plantation– St. Francisville, LA

With about a 2-hour drive, you may want to consider an overnight stay to maximize your driving time, but only if you are brave enough!  The Myrtles Plantation is believed to be one of America’s most haunted homes.  Guests often report hearing footsteps, feeling cold spots, and seeing apparitions during their stay.  If you choose to forego an overnight stay, you can still partake in a guided ghost tour, which is available both during the day and at night.
